Day 45: Put down that gun, you need a sandwich 🥪

Occupy your former self by thinking back to a room you were in as a kid.

Hey, hey!

The journal prompt for today was inspired by this conversation with the renowned writer Mary Karr.

As an award-winning poet, memoirist, and professor, she possesses a remarkable ability to keep things simple and infuse them with humor. When asked what she would put on a billboard, her response was the hilarious quip: "Put down that gun, you need a sandwich."

In her writing process, Mary Karr often taps into the five senses, especially smell, as a means of transporting herself back to her childhood memories. She believes that "the body remembers" and that scents can evoke vivid recollections from the past.

Here’s a writing prompt she loves to ask her students during the first week of a new semester:

Journal Prompt

Occupy your former self by thinking back to a room you were in as a kid. What’s a smell you remember? What were you yearning for at that time? Describe in detail and see where your writing takes you.

Happy journaling,

Kelsey
