The sunset 🌅

Describe one of the most beautiful sunsets you’ve ever seen.

This week’s journal prompts are inspired by Viktor Frankl’s, Man’s Search for Meaning.

Coincidentally, it’s also International Holocaust Remembrance Day, marking the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.

When I chose this book, I had no idea it would align with this day. So it feels like a sign from the universe that it was meant to be.

Frankl’s book is divided into two parts: his tragic experiences as a prisoner in Nazi concentration camps, including Auschwitz, and his profound insights on discovering meaning in life, even during immense suffering.

Reading about everything he endured was heartbreaking. But what moved me was his description of how he and other prisoners found refuge in the beauty of nature.

Frankl recalls an evening when he lay on the floor of his hut, and a fellow prisoner ran in, asking him to come outside to see the sunset:

“Standing outside we saw sinister clouds glowing in the west and the whole sky alive with clouds of ever-changing shapes and colors, from steel blue to blood red
Then, after minutes of moving silence, one prisoner said to another, “How beautiful the world could be!”

Sunsets, and nature in general, have this incredible ability to pull us out of our pain and into something bigger than ourselves.

They’re a reminder to pause, marvel, and simply take in the beauty that exists, even in difficult times.
